They're easy to carry around, easily recognized, can be printed quite cheaply and used in a multitude of ways - it's no wonder that smart marketers are using business cards in ways that go beyond the traditional "name, address, phone number" format.

When you look at them as 2" by 3.5" blank canvases - small, portable, sturdy and professional - it's obvious that a business card can be used quite ingeniously.

Here are examples of some of the more imaginative ways that business men and women use business cards to generate referrals, communicate with clients, or simply make their marketing dollars stretch a bit further:

1) Use your business card as a discount card or coupon card.
Print a business card with a special discount on it or coupon for a free product upgrade or special report. For example, your card could simply say "Present this card for 20% off your next order of $100 or more, courtesy of Olive Toserveyou of Wonder Widgets."

2) Create a fill-in-the-blanks business card.
It's not uncommon to meet someone who has no business cards or who doesn't have them on hand. If you create and carry a simple card that has blank spaces for Name, Phone, Email and Address, it's easy for you to fill it in so that you don't lose valuable contact data.

3) Use them as entry blanks for contests or drawings.
This card might be formatted much like the previous card, but the idea here is to print such cards and use them at trade shows or other events where people would fill in contact info in order to be entered for a prize drawing.

4) Use them to promote other carefully selected businesses.
Used strategically, this idea can have enormous impact. Rather than focusing the bulk of the text of the business card on your business, you list two or three businesses that you recommend. Very often, these businesses will make it a point to refer people to you in return.
